K. Maafushi Council has decided to allocate 314 plots of land from the newly dredged "New Maafushi" near Maafushi mainland.
According to the Maafushi Land Use Plan, 308 land plots of 2000 sqft will be allocated for residential purposes. Maafushi Council President Hassan Solah told AVAS that the remaining six plots would be sold.
The council today announced the rules for the formation of a committee to oversee the allocation of land. The committee will have 11 members.
The newly dredged area was originally planned to be linked to the Maafushi mainland via a causeway. However, at the request of the people, the government has agreed to connect the two islands with a bridge such that launches and dinghy vessels can be accommodated. The bridge construction has already been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Solah said. This is very useful for promoting tourism in Maafushi, the island council believes.
