New appointments to High Court, superior courts, sworn in

Newly appointed judges for the High court and superior courts have been sworn in.

The judges were sworn in at a ceremony held on Monday by Chief Guest and Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) appointed the Criminal Court's Chief Justice, Ahmed Shakeel, to the High Court. Ahmed Shakeel was first appointed as a judge on March 23, 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Sharia and a Master of Sharia in Law from Villa College.

Justice Shakeel has served as a judge for nineteen years. He worked in the Aa. Ukulhuas Magistrate Court, Juvenile Court, Family Court, and Criminal Court.

Three judges were appointed to the Civil Court and three to the Criminal Court.

The judges appointed to the Civil Court are Sinan Ali, Faisal Adam, and Abdulla Ihsan. The judges appointed to the Criminal Court are Ibrahim Ihsan, Ibrahim Zihunee, and Aminath Azlifa.

Profiles of newly appointed superior court judges

Ibrahim Ihsan:
Ibrahim Ihsan was appointed as a magistrate on October 29, 2018. He is currently the Chief Magistrate of the Gaafu Alifu Judicial District. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in Law from the Maldives National University. Before being appointed as a magistrate, Ihsan worked as a legal officer at Gaafu Alif Magistrate Court from 2016.

Ibrahim Zihunee:
Ibrahim Zihunee holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sharia and Law from Al-Azhar University, Egypt. Zihunee has worked as a legal officer at the MWSC since February 2013 and as a legal officer at the Drug Court since 2014. From January 20, 2016, until now, Zihunee has been serving as a Public Prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Aminath Azlifa:
Aminath Azlifa holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law (Hons) from Kulliyat-e-Dirasatul Islamiyya and a Master of Sharia from Villa College. Azlifa has been working in the legal field since 2012. She has worked on the Police Integrity Commission and has been working as a legal officer at the Criminal Court since April 2015.

Sinan Ali:
Sinan Ali holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in Law from Villa College. From July 2015 to date, Sinaan Ali has been a Legal Officer of the Civil Court.

Faisal Adam:
Faisal Adam holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law and a Master of Laws from the Islamic University of the Maldives. From October 2016 to February 2020, he served as the Legal Officer of the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA). Faisal Adam is currently working as an Assistant Registrar in the Supreme Court.

Abdulla Ihsan:
Abdulla Ihsan holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law and a Master of Laws from the Maldives National University. He has been working as a legal officer in the Addu City Council since 2016.
