New Chief Judges appointed to High Court and Civil Court

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Chief Judges for the High Court and Civil Court.

At a ceremony held at the JSC on Monday, letters of appointment were presented to Hussain Shaheed, the freshly appointed Chief Judge of the High Court, and Mariyam Waheed, the new Chief Judge of the Civil Court, by JSC President and Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain. The ceremony was attended by members of the JSC.

The post of Chief Justice of the High Court became vacant following the retirement of former Chief Justice Hathif Hilmy. When the JSC initially opened applications for the post, no applications were received. However, when the opportunity was reopened, Hussain Shaheed emerged as the sole applicant.

In the case of the Civil Court, the position of Chief Justice was vacated due to the sudden passing of Judge Ahmed Nimal on September 19. The applications for the role saw submissions from Mariyam Waheedha and Judge Haafiza Abdul Sattar.
