PPM-PNC senior members meet with HRCM to share concerns

The opposition PPM-PNC coalition has met with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and raised concerns.

Although the senior opposition coalition leaders attempted to meet members of HRCM, they were met by the Secretary General of the Commission.

After the meeting, the opposition coalition's Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the opposition shared concerns with the commission over the appointment of Judge Ahmed Shakeel to the High Court. Earlier in November, while he was the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court, Judge Shakeel had sentenced opposition leader and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom to eleven years in jail on a money laundering and bribery conviction.

In addition, the opposition brought to HRCM's attention that the police used excessive force to break up the serial protests being carried out by the opposition every night.

Abdul Raheem criticized the commission members for not meeting them. He said agencies like the HRCM should be comprised of members who have the ability to listen to the people.

In recent weeks, the opposition coalition leaders have been going to various state agencies to raise concerns on different issues. They sometimes attempt to meet with agency heads without making appointments.
