Rehabilitation programs not conducted for over 300 prisoners

The Health Ministry has said rehabilitation programs to be run for 300 inmates were not conducted.

Health Ministry's Deputy Minister and National Drug Agency (NDA)'s Board Chairman Shamau Shareef told state media PSM's "Raajje Miadhu" program that a study on drug treatment showed that rehabilitation programs had not been conducted for 300 prisoners.

Shamau further noted that 80 percent of prisoners needed NDA treatment but did not receive it. He said that although few prisoners seek drug treatment on their own request, many seek court-ordered treatment.

The study on drug treatment facilities and treatment processes found that some people who complete the drug treatment program use drugs again. Last year, 257 people completed the treatment program at the NDA's rehabilitation centers. These include 233 males and 24 females.
