The Maldives National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDA) will be conducting a study to assess the drug situation in the Maldives.
NDA's Chairperson Lubna Zahir told reporters that a comprehensive study will be conducted to assess the extent of the drug problem in the Maldives. She revealed that the agency has been working closely with the police to track individuals involved in drug-related cases over the past five years. Lubna said discussions are also underway with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC] to conduct the study.
NDA's Acting CEO Mohamed Rashid said the National Drug Council has made the NDA responsible for conducting the study. The task will be given high priority, he said.
Drug cases are reported from islands across the Maldives. The last study on the country’s drug situation was conducted in 2012.
