"Companies overloaded due to ongoing projects"

Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam has said that companies are overloaded due to ongoing projects in the Maldives.

At Monday's Parliament sitting, Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abdullah Shafeeq inquired from the minister regarding delays in projects being implemented.

In his response, Minister Aslam said there are several reasons for the delays. He noted that laws and regulations are made to ensure transparency, including a tendering process, EIA, and standstill period. If any party raises an issue, the process comes to a halt, said Aslam. If the process is to be followed, there will be delays, he added.

"The other thing is our capacity. Whether it is MTCC or other companies, we are at the point of overload because of the works ongoing in the Maldives. So, there is a delay in the work," he said.

Minister Aslam said the contractors' financial situation is also a factor that affects the progress of projects. The changes in the financial situation of the companies due to the COVID-19 pandemic are a reason for delays, he said.
