As a Muslim country, the consumption and trade of alcohol are prohibited for locals.
A 33-year-old man was arrested on Friday in a police operation conducted following a tip-off that he was involved in the alcohol trade. In the operation conducted jointly by the Thinadhoo police and Police Intelligence, 138 cans of beer and 103 bottles of liquor were recovered from the suspect's residence. When the suspect was produced before the Thinadhoo Magistrate's Court to decide on his remand, the court ordered him to be remanded in custody for four days at a location designated by the Home Ministry.
The case is being investigated further by the Thinadhoo police station.
