Gov't seeks financing to upgrade Dhaalu Airport to international standards

The government is pursuing financing options to upgrade Dhaalu Airport into an international airport of high standards.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has issued a resolution, outlining the plan to secure funding for the development of Dhaalu Airport through a cross-subsidy approach. The minimum funding requirement for this project is set at $5 million or MVR 77 million.

Projects implemented under cross-subsidy frameworks are geared towards public welfare or align with specific economic policies. However, it has been noted that these polciies differ from project to project.

Previously, the president had already decreed the development of various airports under the cross-subsidy model. These airports include HDh. Makunudhoo, Sh. Bilehfahi, B. Thulhaadhoo, F. Magoodhoo, Th. Vilufushi, and an undisclosed island located in the southern part of Raa Atoll.

Additionally, the decree includes the upgrading of Kadhdhoo Airport and Madivaru Airport to meet international standards, along with the second phase of the Mafaaru International Airport development.

Moreover, a presidential decree outlines the development of a residential city by dredging the Giraavaru lagoon, also to be implemented under the cross-subsidy principle.
