President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih held a meeting with members of the parliamentary group from the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Several members of the MDP parliamentary group confirmed this meeting to AVAS, but did not provide specific details.
According to one member, the meeting primarily focused on the need to expedite parliamentary work in order to fulfill the government's promises.
The President held the meeting with the MDP parliamentary group amidst an ongoing no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath in the parliament. Sources revealed that the President urged MDP parliamentary group members to maintain unity and act in a manner that does not undermine the government, as opposition parties have initiated no-confidence motions against certain cabinet ministers.
"We assured the President that we will support him in countering any baseless actions that weaken the government," a member who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.
With the second session of this year's parliament scheduled to commence tomorrow, the government is expected to face challenges within the parliamentary proceedings. These challenges primarily arise from MDP President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's increasingly anti-government stance and collaboration with opposing parties. Nasheed has the support of some MDP MPs.
The MDP parliamentary group consists of 67 members, with 53 members believed to align with President Solih, while President Nasheed is purportedly backed by 14 members.
