MDP PG decides to pursue no-confidence motion against Nasheed

The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group has unanimously decided to move a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker and Party President Mohamed Nasheed. The decision was made with a majority vote of the attendees at the 110th meeting of the MDP Parliamentary Group, where 36 out of 41 attendees voted in favor of proceeding with the no-confidence motion.

Speaking to reporters regarding the decision, MDP PG leader and Hithadhoo South MP Mohamed Aslam said many MPs are concerned with Nasheed's conduct in the capacity of the Parliament Speaker. He said MDP members have repeatedly pointed out Nasheed's non-compliance to Parliament rules, both on the Parliament floor and in other forums.

Aslam noted that the no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, which was on the agenda for today’s parliament session, could not be addressed due to Nasheed’s actions.

Although the parliamentary group has decided to pursue a no-confidence motion against Nasheed, the formal process of signing the no-confidence motion has not yet started, Aslam said.
