JP hands over presidential ticket to Qasim

The Jumhooree Party (JP)'s presidential ticket has been officially handed over to its leader Qasim Ibrahim.

The ticket was handed over to Qasim at a special ceremony held at Male' Carnival Area on Friday night. The ticket was presented to Qasim by the party's Secretary General, Ali Arif.

In February this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended an invitation to the JP to maintain its existing alliance with the main-ruling MDP for the upcoming presidential election. However, the JP declined the invitation and chose to nominate its own candidate for the election. This decision was reached unanimously at the JP's national conference held earlier this year.

The JP opened applications for those interested in contesting the party's presidential primary on March 16. By the deadline, Qasim was the only candidate who applied, securing him the ticket by default.

The presidential election is slated for September 9, with a potential second round on September 30 if necessary.
