PPM Senator leaves party

The opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM)'s Senator Ahmed Ghalib has left the party.

Ghalib, who serves as the Kela constituency president of the Progressive Congress Coalition, cited the absence of favorable circumstances or a conducive environment to continue his affiliation with the PPM.

Ghalib is related to Male' City Mayor Mohamed Muizzu, who is rumored to be working to secure the PPM presidential ticket. While the party's ticket has already been awarded to its leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, he is currently ineligible to contest the election due to an ongoing sentence for money laundering. He cannot contest the election unless a higher court quashes his Criminal Court conviction.
