RDC's Chairman resigns from post

The Road Development Corporation (RDC)'s Chairman, Abdulla Afeef, has resigned.

According to the Privatization Board, the body that regulates government-owned companies, Afeef resigned on June 12. The exact reason for his resignation is unknown.

Afeef supported the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s President and Parliament Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed, in the MDP presidential primary. Therefore, it is believed that Afeef resigned as RDC Chairman to join The Democrats, a new party being formed by Nasheed's supporters who have defected from the MDP.

In response to the defections, the government is taking measures to address the situation by seeking the removal of senior government officials who have defected from the MDP to join the Democrats.
