Democrats accuse MDP of hindering Pres-elect's swearing-in over Speaker dispute

The Democrats has accused the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of attempting to obstruct the swearing-in of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The Democrats' remarks comes while the MDP has said it would not recognize Dr. Muizzu's inauguration in November unless Nasheed were removed from the Speaker position. They also made it clear that they would not approve Muizzu's cabinet without Nasheed's impeachment.

In response to MDP's decision, the Democrats issued a statement condemning what they perceive as an attempt by some members of the MDP parliamentary group to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect and Vice-President-elect, allegedly at the request of the outgoing President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

"We condemn the efforts by some MDP parliamentary group members and urge them to align with the will of the people, uphold the Constitution, embrace democratic principles, and adhere to ethical standards," The Democrats said in a brief statement.

While both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla are Democrat members, VIlufushi MP Hassan Affeef, who temporarily assumes the Speaker in the absence of Nasheed and Eva, is also a Decmorats member. Therefore, the government faces significant challenges in putting important issues and bills on the agenda at parliamentary sessions.
