President of religiously-conservative Adhaalath Party and Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said the party's current goal is to establish an Islamic system of government.
Imran made the statement at a meeting held with some party members in preparation for the upcoming presidential election. Adhaalath Party has agreed to form an alliance with the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and back President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the election.
Speaking at the meeting, Imran said the party's main strategy is to work towards governing the Maldives under an Islamic system. He affirmed the party's unwavering commitment to this goal and emphasized the importance of taking action in order to achieve it. He also noted that the party had reached a crucial stage in its journey towards realizing this objective and stressed the significance of undertaking necessary steps with determination.
Imran said when the party was initially formed, its purpose was not to rule the country or remove people from power and facilitate leadership changes. He said the Adhaalath Party has worked to reform the country and now aspires to create an Islamic system of governance in the Maldives, he said.
