Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said he would vacate his state-appointed residence, Muraidhooge, as soon as the notice period for the no-confidence vote against him expires.
The main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is seeking a no-confidence motion against Nasheed, and the 14-day notice to respond to the motion was issued to Nasheed last week. The notice period will expire next Sunday.
Muraidhooge was designated as Nasheed's official residence after the May 6, 2021 assassination attempt on Nasheed life, upon MNDF's request. The MNDF is responsible for the security of the three heads of state.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament Secretariat on Monday, Nasheed said he is heavily criticized by MPs of MDP for recusing himself from presiding over parliamentary sessions until a decision is made on the no-confidence motion against him.
Responding to criticism that Nasheed enjoyed Speakers' allowances and benefits without conducting parliamentary sessions and fulfilling his duties, Nasheed said he would move to his personal residence, G. Kenereege, upon the expiry of his 14-day notice.
"Staying in Muraidhooge is not something I want to do,'" Nasheed said.
Nasheed described his lonesome life at Muraidhooge and said the home is dark and blocked in all directions. He said he would "lay dead" if the government refused to provide him security after he moved out from his official residence.
