Three candidates who contested the Guraidhoo constituency by-election earlier this year have been fined.
The Guraidhoo by-election was held on April 15 this year, with Hussain Riza from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Ibrahim Riza from the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Ali Arif from Maldives National Party (MNP) contesting the election. Ibrahim Shaaz won the by-election, and he was sworn in as an MP.
An Election Commission official told AVAS Monday that the three candidates who contested the by-election and their agents were fined for not completing their financial statements, as required by the General Elections Act. Each candidate was fined MVR 6,000.
According to the law, financial statements must be submitted within 21 days of the election date. The financial statements must be audited by an auditor recognized by the relevant authorities.
