President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he will contest the upcoming presidential election as the largest coalition's presidential candidate.
The President, who is seeking re-election, is currently on a campaign tour to Shaviyani atoll.
Speaking to the people of Maroshi island, President Solih said the coalition for the upcoming election currently boasts a registered membership of 77,700 members. The aim is to increase the number of coalition members to 90,000 within the next two months, he said.
"This is the largest coalition ever to contest an election," he said.
The primary ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has forged alliances with the Adhaalath Party and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) for the upcoming presidential election. While the Jumhooree Party, a member of the current ruling coalition, declined the invitation to join the coalition and opted to field its own candidate, the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), another coalition member, has yet to respond to President Solih's invitation to form a coalition.
