The Democrats to hold primary to select presidential candidate

The Democrats will be conducting a primary to choose their presidential candidate. The decision was made during the inaugural meeting of the Democrats' interim council members.

Hassan Latheef, the founder of The Democrats and MP for Henveiru West, announced that the party would soon be accepting applications from those interested in participating in the primary.

During the Democrat's interim council meeting, a special committee was formed to oversee primary-related matters. Other committees were also formed.

While the newly registered party has announced its intention to hold a primary, no individual has thus far expressed interest in the party's ticket. However, it is widely speculated that Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who recently joined The Democrats, will be the party's presidential candidate. The Democrats was formed by Nasheed loyalists who left the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following his massive defeat in the MDP Primary against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
