Cannot support ambitions that focus on seeking power: Nasheed

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his concern about other political parties solely focusing on attaining power.

Speaking at a rally held by The Democrats at Baa Thulhaadhoo on Tuesday night, emphasized that the primary goal for any person or party should not be to become the ruling party, as an insatiable thirst for power poses significant concerns. He firmly stated that he could not support such ambitions.

Nasheed said although coming to power is attainable, it should not be the goal and objective. He also said the government should not serve the people with the sole intention of securing a second term in office and that such ambitions can be detrimental to the country and its people.

Nasheed also spoke about issues with recording how state revenues are utilized while several development projects are ongoing. Adding that holding the government accountable will lead to positive changes in development work, Nasheed said Working to hold the government accountable is often translated as being against the government. However, he said his efforts to hold the government accountable stem from a place of love.
