Fourteen arrested at PPM-PNC protest

Fourteen people were arrested at the PPM-PNC protest held on Wednesday night.

The main opposition has been organizing a series of demonstrations, demanding the release of their jailed leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom.

At last night's protest, eleven men and three women were taken into police custody. The police have not yet disclosed any information on their remand status.

The Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to 11 years in prison in December last year on bribery and money laundering charges. Although he has been granted the PPM-PNC presidential ticket, his eligibility to contest the upcoming September election hinges on a higher court overturning the lower court's verdict. The opposition strongly believes that Yameen was unjustly jailed, driven by political motives.
