EC passes no confidence vote against commission pres Fuwad

The Election Commission has passed a no-confidence vote against its President, Fuwad Thawfeek.

The motion was voted upon during the commission meeting held on July 18, with a majority of three out of five members expressing their lack of confidence in Fuwad's ability to carry out his duties as the President. However, the commission refrained from providing any official comments regarding the meeting.

While a document on the decisions taken at the meeting has been posted on the Election Commission's website, it was stated that a resolution had been passed that Fuwad's performance as the commission's President could not be trusted.

Fuwad could not be reached for comment on the commission's decision.

The President and Vice-President of the Election Commission are elected by a vote among the members of the Commission. However, there is no provision in the Election Commission Act to remove the President and Vice-President from the post. A member of the Election Commission may be removed from office only by submission to the Parliament and approval by the Parliament.

The no-confidence motion against Fuwad arose after some members of the commission had already expressed no confidence in him for allegedly using his positional influence to register the latest political party, The Democrats.
