The term of Election Commission (EC) member Ali Nashath has reached its expiration.
Nashath was appointed to EC on July 25, 2018, during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom's government. Nashath's five-year tenure has ended with the presidential election looming ahead, with only 47 days remaining until the election.
In May this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih forwarded NAshath's name to the Parliament for re-appointment to the EC. However, a decision is yet to be made as the matter remained pending when the Parliament went into recess on June 22.
With Nashath's term now expired, the EC currently operates with four members. Recently, the EC witnessed a no-confidence vote against its President, Fuwad Thawfeek, which passed successfully. Nashath was one of the three commission members who voted against Fuwad during the no-confidence motion.
