Candidate numbers to be allocated on Aug 9

The Election Commission (EC) announced that candidate numbers will be allocated to presidential candidates on August 9.

The drawing event will take place at the Election Center in Dharubaaruge, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice President of the EC, emphasized the importance of candidates personally attending the draw. In cases where a candidate cannot be present, a designated representative may attend on the candidate's behalf.

EC has opened the opportunity for those interested in contesting the presidential election to submit their candidacy papers until August 7. Only PPM's presidential candidate President Abdulla Yameen has filed his candidacy so far. However, EC has rejected his candidacy due to eligibility concerns, leading to a legal challenge in the Supreme Court.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also intends to seek re-election. Besides President Solih and Yameen, other individuals who have expressed their intent to contest the September election include Ilyas Labeeb from The Democrats, Qasim Ibrahim from the Jumhooree Party, Mohamed Nazim from the Maldives National Party, Faris Maumoon from the Maldives Reform Movement, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from the People's National Congress, and former Home Minister Umar Naseer.
