The opposing People's National Congress (PNC)'s presidential candidate, Male City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has submitted his candidacy form to contest the upcoming presidential election.
Muizzu handed over his candidacy form to Election Commission (EC)'s President Fuwad Thawfeek at a ceremony held at the Dharubaaruge Election Centre on Monday morning. The ceremony was attended by Muizzu’s running mate, Faresmathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef and PNC's President Abdul Raheem Abdullah, and several other senior officials of PNC.
Muizzu submitted his form to contest the presidential election while the PPM-PNC coalition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen, ordered the parties to boycott the election after the Supreme Court barred him from contesting the election. However, the PPM-PNC coalition Senate voted yesterday not to boycott the election.
The Election Commission has already accepted the candidacies of other contenders, including President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih from the MDP, Mohamed Nazim from the MNP, and Ilyas Labeeb from The Democrats. Candidate numbers for the race will be assigned on August 9, and the presidential election is scheduled for September 9. In the event of a second round of voting, it would take place on September 30.
