Tourism Minister Mausoom leaves JP

Tourism Minister Dr. Abdullah Mausoom has left the Jumhooree Party (JP).

The minister resigned from the party on Monday and disclosed the decision to the public via a tweet.

Dr. Mausoom, who had previously been associated with the now-dissolved Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), joined the JP on May 5, 2014. The minister, who was appointed to his current position under a JP slot, has left the party after nine years.

In his tweet, Minister Maumoon extended his gratitude to JP's leader, Qasim Ibrahim, and other senior officials for their support during his tenure with the party.

The former Vice President of JP opted to leave the party following several months of absence from its events, following party leader Qasim Ibrahim's announcement of his intent to contest the presidential election. It is expected that he may now align himself with the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih seeks re-election for a second term.
