Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has joined the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The minister's membership form was handed over to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday.
Dr. Mausoom was initially appointed to the cabinet under the banner of the ruling coalition partner, the Jumhooree Party, of which he has been a member for over nine years. However, he departed from the party's ranks earlier this month after several months of limited involvement in party matters, with just a few weeks remaining until the presidential election. His departure was influenced by JP leader Qasim Ibrahim's decision to contest the presidential election instead of backing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for re-election.
