Muizzu vows to tackle national debt burden, foster responsible expenditure

The main opposition coalition, PPM-PNC'spresidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said that he will not allow debt to become a burden on the people.

Speaking at a campaign rally at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi on Saturday, Muizzu said the country has plunged into a deep debt pit with national debt exceeding MVR 100 billion. He underscored his commitment to formulating sustainable strategies to tackle the country's debt issues if he is elected to office.

“We will hopefully make short and medium-term restructuring plans and ensure that the loans are repaid with ease,” he said.

Muizzu further noted that some government-owned companies that are being funded by the state budget, which has a detrimental impact on the people. He said his government would draft a law to manage state expenditure, enabling the government to manage its expenditure responsibly.
