"Fulfilling basic needs of the people doesn't require promises": Dr. Muizzu

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition's presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizz has said promises are not necessary to facilitate basic needs for the people.

At a campaign rally in Haa Alifu Vashafaru on Monday, Muizzu said politicians are pledging to provide basic needs such as addressing erosion issues and waste management. However, such promises are being made because they do not think about the people, he said, adding that he believed that a good government should take care of basic needs without making big promises.

“Our thinking is that we have a government that will do the basics without question,” he said.

Muizzu said he is unable to visit all islands of Maldives during his campaign due to the lack of time. However, he asserted that a PPM government would meet all the basic needs of the people, irrespective of their islands. Under one of the main slogans of the PPM-PNC, “Housing for all, jobs for all,” the government will find solutions for the challenges people meet in these areas, he said.

Addressing the housing issues faced by the majority of islands, Muizzu said he would expand the land area of such islands by dredging land. A soft loan system will be provided for the construction of buildings on the land allocated to the residents. In addition, infrastructural development projects will be carried out without discrimination between islands, he said.

Muizzu stressed that the government's most important job is to make people's lives better. He said the City Hotel under construction in Vashafaru, which is expected to increase job opportunities on the island, would be completed within the first six months of a PPM government. He also assured that other development projects will be carried out on the island.

"Our ideology goes hand in hand with development. We can do this," he said.
