Over 8,000 applications received to act as observers

The Elections Commission has received 8,152 applications to act as observers in the upcoming presidential election.

The commission's Vice President, Ismail Habeeb said of the applications received, 4,545 were from local media entities, while an additional 3,607 applications were from political parties, associations, organizations, and independent individuals. He said the surge in niterest to act as observers was very encouraging, adding that the applications are currently being verified and accredited.

"There will be 574 polling stations across the country for the presidental electiom. The fact that about 14 people from the Maldives will observe and monitor the election at each polling station is a great encouragement and satisfaction for the EC to conduct the election within the framework of law and order," Habeeb said.

Habeeb further said the involvement of local and international monitors and observers will make this year's presidential election unparalleled in terms of oversight.
