Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj resigns from MDP

Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj has resigned from the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

In a letter addressed to MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, Moosa Siraj said he was leaving the party as he no longer wished to remain as an MDP member.

"As I no longer wish to be a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, please remove my name from the party's register starting today," his letter said.

Although he had supported President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the eleventh hour of the MDP presidential primary in January, Siraj's recent inactivity within the government and his criticism of land allocation decisions in Male' City have marked his divergence. Reliable sources have hinted at potential discussions for Siraj to join The Democrats, a breakaway faction of the MDP.
