The state budget for next year will be passed with funds included in the budget for salary increments for all sectors that have not received salary increases. The announcement was made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a campaign event held at Baa Thulhaadhoo on Monday night.
Speaking at the event, President Solih, who is seeking re-election, said the new salaries would come into effect on January 2024. While salary increases for the education and health sectors had already been implemented since his term began, President Solih affirmed that civil service employees, including the armed forces, police, immigration, customs, corrections, imams, muazzins, judicial staff, and local council workers, will experience salary adjustments.
The President said that with the salary change, salary raises will average around 40 percent. President Solih provided specific comparisons between current and post-increment salaries:
Police constables: MVR 11,000 to MVR 15,400
Army privates: MVR 11,600 to MVR 16,100
Civil Service Directors: MVR 16,000 to MVR 23,200
Local council employees: MVR 7,200 to MVR 10,500
The President said these salary adjustments aim to improve the quality of life for families and empower self-sufficiency. He emphasized the importance of equal distribution of state revenue among citizens and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs.
The president said the positive changes in salaries and the results will be seen in the next few months.
The president did not share the exact budget allocation for these increases or detailed revenue-raising strategies.
