MDP's manifesto proposes changes to Parliament composition

The manifesto of the MDP presidential candidate, incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has proposed to change the composition of the Parliament.

The Elections Commission has announced that the number of Parliament seats is set to increase for the next Parliamentary term. According to the Constitution, members of Parliament are elected for every 5,000 people, leading to adjustments as the population grows. Previous attempts to amend the Constitution to limit member numbers have been rejected by the parliament.

The MDP manifesto's 'Good Governance' policy aims to introduce constitutional amendments to bring to an end the increase of Parliament members every five years.

Similar pledges have been made by some other candidates contesting the upcoming presidential election.
