Dr. Muizzu acknowledges campaign limitations in island visits

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the PPM-PNC presidential candidate, has acknowledged the practical limitations of visiting all inhabited islands of the Maldives before the upcoming September presidential election.

Dr. Muizzu was the last to initiate his campaign for the September presidential election amidst last-minute uncertainties regarding his candidacy following differences within the PPM-PNC coalition. These differences emerged over selecting a candidate to replace the incarcerated former President Abdulla Yameen as their candidate. Given the constrained time available for campaigning, the PPM-PNC strategically organized campaign rallies in the main islands of atolls, urging supporters from nearby islands to attend these rallies.

Speaking at a campaign rally at Noonu Kendhokulhudhoo on Thursday, Dr. Muizzu explained that due to the brief timeframe for campaigning, physically covering all 187 inhabited islands was unfeasible. He appealed to the people not to interpret his absence on certain islands as a form of discrimination, emphasizing his commitment to inclusivity.

While expressing his desire to visit all 187 inhabited islands of Maldives during his campaign, Dr. Muizzu acknowledged the logistical challenges. He shared that his campaign team, including his running mate MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef and senior PPM-PNC leadership members, would visit the islands he could not personally reach.

Muizzu’s campaign has thus far covered islands in Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu Shaviyani, Nppnu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu atolls and Addu City. Door-to-door campaigning has also been conducted in Hulhumale.
