Dr. Muizzu vows to halt projects that undermine country's independence

The PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said he would terminate any agreement that threatens the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives.

Speaking at a campaign rally at ADh. Mahibadhoo on Monday night, Muizzu said incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's campaign was making false claims that he would halt ongoing development projects upon assuming office.

Muizzu assured that he would not stop any project carried out within the legal framework and said he would encourage the expedited completion of ongoing projects. However, while development is important, safeguarding the country's independence takes precedence, he said.

"Independence is number one. There is no room for compromise on independence," he said.

Muizzu said it would be a grave mistake if a project was awarded through a secret agreement. If elected, he pledged to examine such issues in the national interest and make decisions that best serve the country.

Dr. Muizzu also highlighted his commitment to the "first country policy" initiated by former President Abdulla Yameen. Under this policy, no foreign military personnel or troops would be permitted to stay in the Maldives. Any agreements compromising the country's independence, such as the former MDP government's deal with India's GMR to develop Velana International Airport, would be terminated.

Muizzu further voiced concern that the “depth” of the contracts given to Indian companies for the development of MNDF's Uthuru Thila Falhu and the construction of the Thila-Male' Bridge is unknown. He also criticized the government for the slow implementation of the projects.

“Isn't it clear that there are some problems because not a single pillar [of the Thilamala Bridge] is visible within five years?,” Muizzu questioned.
