Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has firmly stated that voting for the PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in the upcoming presidential election is not a viable choice for the people or the nation.
Speaking at a campaign event at Raa Maakurathu on Monday, President Solih said most Maldivian citizens support one of two ideologies in this election: MDP or PPM/PNC. While there are other candidates in the presidential race, the President emphasized that the majority of the population is leaning toward either the MDP or the PPM/PNC candidate.
The president said the people must carefully consider the potential consequences of casting their vote for Dr. Muizzu. He appealed to them to support his candidacy if they wished to avoid a return to the periods of injustice and fear that the country had experienced in the past. The President pointed out that the Maldives endured its most challenging and tumultuous period when the PPM was in power from 2013 to 2018.
"If you vote for Dr. Muizzu and he wins, we will regress into a state of fear and insecurity. So, that is not a choice for us. It is not a choice for any Maldivian citizen or this country," he said.
Referring to other candidates, President Solih said none of them come close to competing with the MDP. He highlighted the widespread support for the current government in the islands as evidence of this fact.
"If any of you vote for any of the other candidates, it is a wasted vote. It will yield no result," he said.
The President urged the people not to waste their votes and asserted that MDP was the only choice for the election and for the country's future.
"There is no other option but to vote for the MDP. If you vote for the PNC, the whole country will be in ruin. If you vote for the others, it is a lost vote," he said.
The President further said that his aim is to bring about a positive and transformative change in the Maldives, envisioning a future of happiness and peace for the nation.
