The Democrats in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo have decided to support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the presidential candidate for the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in the upcoming second round of the presidential election.
In the initial round of the presidential election, the Democrats' candidate, Ilyas Labeeb, secured the third position, and thus, did not advance to the second round. While President Solih and PPM-PNC candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu are set to compete in the second round this Saturday, the Democrats have opted not to formally endorse either candidate.
On his visit to Thinadhoo island on Wednesday, President Solih received a warm welcome from the local residents, including Democrats donning T-shirts in their party colors. Some Democrats said they decided to support President Solih in the second round because his policies align closely with those of Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
