No by-election for Faresmathoda Constituency

There will be no by-election for the Faresmathoda constituency, as confirmed by the Election Commission (EC).

This decision comes as questions arose about the possibility of a by-election when MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef, elected as Vice President of the Maldives, is sworn in on November 17.

According to the EC, the seat will remain vacant until the MP elected for the constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for early next year, is sworn in. Article 78 of the Constitution stipulates that a member should be elected within 60 days from the date of vacancy due to the resignation of a member. However, if there is a period of six months or less between the vacancy and the parliamentary election, a member shall not be elected to the vacant seat.

The parliamentary elections will be held in early March next year. The Election Commission has not yet announced the official date.
