MDP once again initiates no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group has unanimously decided to initiate a no-confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed once again. The decision was taken at the MDP Parliamentary Group meeting held Sunday.

This move follows a similar motion filed in June against Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla. However, the MDP withdrew the cases prior to the second round of the presidential election to facilitate the Democrats' support. Ultimately, the Democrats ultimately did not endorse any candidate in the second round.

Some members of the MDP parliamentary group said the case is being resubmitted to parliament to make it easier to hold the government accountable when the MDP transitions to an opposition party with the new administration taking office in November.

The Democrats have expressed their displeasure with MDP's attempts to remove Nasheed from his position.
