The President-elect and current Mayor of Male' city, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said his incoming government would meet the needs of Male' residents and uphold the essence of decentralization. He made the commitment at his farewell meeting with all Male' City Council employees on Saturday evening.
During his tenure as Male' Mayor, Muizzu worked to formulate and implement a comprehensive five-year plan to solve the major challenges in Male'. However, the city council and the government have been in conflict for the past two years.
Speaking at Saturday's gathering, Dr. Muizzu identified the primary challenge in realizing his vision for Male' City over the past two years as the government's lack of cooperation to issue necessary permits.
"This presented significant challenges for us. Had we not encountered these obstacles, we could have accomplished so much more, we could have completed more comprehensive projects. The road infrastructure would have been completed, parking structures built, and solutions found to these issues," he said.
Dr.Muizzu said that after he is sworn in as President, the government will work in cooperation with the local councils in the true sense of the Decentralization Act. He assured that the government will arrange for the work of the councils to be carried out expeditedly.
"We are ready to provide assistance. I assure you of that," Dr. Muizzu said.
During the meeting, Dr. Muizzu expressed his gratitude to city council employees for their dedication and cooperation throughout his term as Mayor.
Dr. Muizzu is scheduled to be sworn in as President on November 17. He will remain as Male' Mayor until then.
