Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shukoor has decided to contest for Male' Mayor position. According to Azima, she is seeking to contest for the post under the banner of the PPM-PNC's Progressive Congress Coalition.
The upcoming swearing-in of the current Mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as the President of the Maldives on November 17 will result in a vacancy for the Male' Mayor post. The Elections Commission is preparing to hold a by-election to elect the Mayor for Male' in January next year.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Azima expressed her motivation to run for the mayoral role, emphasizing her longstanding commitment to national service, which began at the age of 17, and her passion to serve the people.
“...I believe that there is still a lot of work to be done to truly develop the Male' area, and I want to take the initiative in doing so for the people of Maldives,” the statement said.
Azima assured that she would work with a strategic approach to solve the major problems facing the city. She expressed her commitment to implementing Dr. Muizzu's five-year strategic plan for Male' City.
Former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed has also announced that he will contest for the Mayoral seat on the PPM-PNC ticket.
