Auditor General orders recovery of funds paid to ineligible recipients

The Auditor General, Hussain Niyazy, has issued an order for the recovery of single-mother allowance disbursed to individuals in violation of established policies. This directive is a part of the findings presented in the audit report on the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).

The audit report revealed that in 2020, NSPA made payments totaling MVR 93,000 to nine women who did not qualify as single mothers. The disbursement errors occurred due to the absence of a robust system for verifying marriage and divorce information through the courts, the report noted.

In response, the Auditor General has called for establishing a more effective system to provide accurate divorce and marriage information to NSPA. Additionally, he has instructed that appropriate action be taken against the employees responsible for the oversight and for the recovery of the misallocated funds. If the negligent employees refuse to take responsibility, the matter will be referred to the relevant authorities for further action.
