PNC submits 12,000 membership forms to EC

The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has submitted 12,000 party membership forms to the Election Commission (EC).

A PNC official told AVAS today that the forms were submitted following the presidential election and that approximately 20,000 additional forms have been received as part of ongoing initiatives to boost party membership.

“Our party chairperson and presidential special adviser Abdul Raheem has set a target of making the PNC the largest party in the country before the end of this year. We are working towards that," he said.

The Election Commission last updated the register of political parties on its website on February 21 this year. According to the data, the PNC currently has 3,159 members.

The PNC launched a major membership campaign following their candidate, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's astounding victory in the presidential election on the request of the president. President Muizzu urged the party to achieve 10,000 members without transferring members from its sister party, the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). However, it is noted that a significant portion of the new members joining the PNC are from the PPM.
