FENAKA denies mass employee termination allegations

FENAKA Corporation has refuted allegations that the company had terminated employees after the government changed on November 17.

On Tuesday, an emergency motion was submitted to the Parliament by the opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), claiming mass terminations at FENAKA branches nationwide since the new government took over administration.

Speaking to AVAS, an official from FENAKA said that the emergency motion was not based on factual information. He explained that the previous government hired hundreds of temporary employees on contract, and while some of the employee contracts have expired, the current management has decided not to renew such contracts. He emphasized the distinction between terminating an employee and opting not to renew contracts.

In the previous government, temporary employees were often hired for specific projects and released upon project completion. During the last administration, FENAKA employed nearly 2,000 individuals on a temporary basis for various projects, including the construction of office buildings.

The corporation has historically faced criticism for issues related to corruption and debt. At the conclusion of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's term, FENAKA had approximately 8,000 employees.
