The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed support for the government’s proposed amendments to the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act.
The amendments to the act were proposed on behalf of the government by Holhudhoo MP Abdul Sattar Mohamed. These amendments were debated during Tuesday’s parliament sitting.
During the debate,, minority leader and Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil praised the bill and emphasized its significance in preventing cybercrime offenses.
".. it is still likely that further amendments to the bill may be required again based on the time. I would say the current proposed amendments introduced today are important for this season,” he said.
MP Nazil also supported recommendations made by other MPs to seek the assistance of relevant agencies and experts to finalize the bill.
Nazil further pointed out that existing laws have been ineffective in addressing issues related to computer networks in recent years.
“Especially from the police, we often want to obtain information through banks or NCIT, but they cannot effectively do this as they lack the necessary authority within the legal framework,” Nazil said.
