Democrats issue three-line whip against salary increase

The Democrats has issued a three-line whip against the Parliament's Public Finance Committee decision to increase the salaries of members of Parliament.

After informal meetings held by the Public Finance Committee to review the salaries of the posts of which the Parliament decides the salary, Dhaandhoo MP Yauqoob Abdulla submitted a paper as a proposal to the committee. The proposed salary hikes span various roles, including members of Parliament, the President, Vice President, Cabinet members, judges, independent institutions, mayors, and councillors.

Former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and Democrats member MP Eva Abdulla today said that a three-line whip has been issued against the salary increase. She called on the committee, which has an MDP majority, and MDP members to reconsider their decision to increase the salary, stating that the country's financial and economic situation does not allow for a salary increase.

Next year's budget will spend MVR 90 million on these salary increases while MVR 500 million has been included in total for salary increments across different sectors.
