President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday visited flood-impacted residences in Malé City that were severely affected by the torrential rains and subsequent flooding. The president was accompanied by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Cabinet Ministers, and senior government officials.
During his visit to the residences in the city's four wards, the President inspected the damage caused by the flooding and interacted with the victims, expressing his concern for their well-being.
Speaking with the media onsite, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the government's plan to undertake a comprehensive redevelopment of the roadways in Malé City, including installing additional stormwater drainage systems underneath the city's streets to rectify the city's flooding issues. The President stated that further efforts would include improving the disaster management system to mitigate the impact of such impending events causing extensive property damage to households and businesses and other damages in Malé City and the islands, thereby providing a lasting solution.
54 people from 11 houses in the city were evacuated due to heavy rains yesterday. The Malé City Council (MCC), in collaboration with the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), relevant governmental agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and citizens, were actively involved in receding flood waters from the city. The authorities have launched nationwide collaborative efforts under the President's leadership to assist those impacted by the flooding.
