Mayor-elect Azim voices concern on decision to transfer council projects to ministry

Male' Mayor-elect Adam Azim has called on the government to stop influencing the work of Male' City Council. Azim's call comes after the government's proposal to transfer some City Council projects exceeding MVR 100 million to the Construction Ministry.

During Wednesday's Council meeting, President's Office Corporate Development Minister Mohamed Shahid recommended assigning the construction of a building housing Male' City's main markets and parking buildings to the government. The proposal received approval with a vote of 10 out of 11 present councilors, with one abstention.

Voicing his concern on the decision, Mayor-elect Azim took to social media and emphasized that the people of the city have clearly stated how they wish for council matters to be carried out. Describing Minister Shahid's proposal as an attempt by the government to take over the work of the City Council, he pointed out that the decision contradicts Chapter 8 of the Constitution and urged the government to refrain from such interventions. Azim also called on the council to delay the implementation of the decision until he assumes office as the Mayor.
