Proposed Land Act amendment seeks swift title handover for land plot recipients

An amendment to the Land Act has been proposed to make it compulsory to hand over land titles to land recipients under the former government's Binveriyaa Scheme within three months. The amendment was moved by Mikaeel Ahmed Naseem, MP for Galolhu South at Sunday's parliament sitting.

Introducing the bill, MP Mikaeel said land plots and titles must be handed over within three months of the amendment being enacted to individuals listed in the officially gazetted final list of land recipients.

the proposed revision aims to modify existing laws to facilitate the handover of both land plots and deeds to beneficiaries of residential land plots within a maximum period of six months from the date of the gazettement of the permanent list of land recipients.

The Binveriyaa scheme, established by the previous government, allocates land from Hulhumale' Phase II and III, Giraavalhufalhu, and Gulhifalhu for Male' residents.

A total of 23,088 applications were submitted as single applicants and joint applicants in the first round of the Binveriyaa scheme. Of these, 18,955 people were deemed eligible, and 9,003 plots have been allocated.

The program offers three sizes of plots. The minimum plot size for an individual is 1,250 sqft. In case of joint application, 400 sqft will be added to plots for each additional person. If more than seven people submit the application, a total of 4,000 sqft will be allocated.
